What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)?
a severe form of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that is much more serious than typical morning sickness. HG is most common in the 1st trimester, but can persist throughout pregnancy in severe cases
Key features of HG are:
Persistent, excessive vomiting
Inability to keep food or fluids down
Weight loss (>5% of pre-pregnancy weight)
Dehydration
Electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low potassium)
Ketonuria (ketones in urine)
There is help. Contact your doctor immediately if you are unable to keep any fluids down for 24 hours, have symptoms of dehydration (i.e., very dark or little urine, no urination for 8 hours, dizziness or fainting, dry mouth or extreme thirst), weight loss, vomit that contains blood or looks like coffee grounds, severe abdominal pain, fever, rapid heartbeat, confusion, or extreme weakness.
