How does the abortion pill work?
A medication abortion involves taking two different drugs at separate times:
- Mifepristone is taken first to block progesterone, a hormone necessary for the pregnancy to continue.
- Misoprostol is taken 1–2 days later and causes the uterus to contract, leading to cramping and bleeding as the pregnancy tissue is expelled.
Who Should Not Use the Abortion Pill?
Medication abortion may not be appropriate in certain situations, including:
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Current IUD use
- Long-term steroid treatment
- Chronic adrenal disorders
- Blood thinner use
- Allergic reactions to either medication
- Anemia
Consulting with a medical professional is essential to determine if this option is safe for you.
