An ultrasound allows medical providers to view what’s happening inside your body and gather important information about your pregnancy. It can help determine how far along you are, assess fetal development, and confirm the location of the pregnancy.
What’s an ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a medical procedure that uses sound waves to produce live images from inside the body. This imaging method, also called sonography, does not use radiation, making it a safe and commonly used tool during pregnancy.
How does an ultrasound work?
For the procedure, a technician will apply a clear gel to your skin to help the ultrasound device move smoothly and improve image quality. The device, known as a transducer, sends sound waves into your body that reflect off internal tissues and structures.
These returning sound waves are translated into images by a computer, allowing the provider to view them in real time on a screen. Printed images may also be available if requested.
To get the best possible images, you may be asked to change positions during the exam. In some cases, a transvaginal ultrasound may be used for a clearer view. After the procedure, the gel will be removed, and you’ll be able to continue your normal routine.
