How does the abortion pill work?
The abortion pill process uses two medications:
- Mifepristone is taken first to block progesterone, stopping the pregnancy from continuing.
- Misoprostol is taken 24–48 hours later to cause cramping and bleeding, allowing the uterus to empty.
When Might the Abortion Pill Not Be an Option?
Certain medical conditions may make medication abortion unsafe, including:
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Having an IUD
- Long-term steroid use
- Adrenal conditions
- Blood thinner use
- Allergies to the medications
- Anemia
