How does the abortion pill work?
The abortion pill involves two medications taken in sequence:
- Mifepristone is taken first. This medication blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for the pregnancy to continue. Without progesterone, the pregnancy cannot continue to develop.
- Misoprostol is taken 24–48 hours later. This medication causes cramping and bleeding, which allows the uterus to empty.
Who May Not Be Eligible for the Abortion Pill?
In some situations, a medication abortion may not be recommended. These include:
- An ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy located outside the uterus)
- Having an intrauterine device (IUD) in place
- Long-term steroid use
- Chronic adrenal conditions
- Use of blood-thinning medications
- Allergies to mifepristone or misoprostol
- Anemia
It’s important to speak with a qualified medical provider about your health history to determine what is safest for you.
